Therapists often ask us whether they should purchase Volume I or Volume II.  If you aren't able to purchase the entire set, we recommend starting with Volume I, as this teaches you the basic model. Yalom has always maintained that if you learn the core skills of his interpersonal approach, then you can effectively adapt them to different populations.  If you're only working with high-functioning outpatient groups then Volume I will suffice.  Volume II shows you how to modify the basic model when working in settings or with populations that require more structure (this model is fully described in his text Inpatient Group Psychotherapy). Although the clients shown in Volume II are in an inpatient setting, this model can be used (perhaps with minor tweaks) in outpatient, day treatment, and residential settings, for populations including substance abusers, dual diagnoses, adolescents, and other lower to mid-functioning clients. If you're working specifically in an inpatient setting or day treatment setting with clients who need a lot of structure, then Volume II might be your best choice.  As always, feel free to give us a call, and we're happy to talk to you and help you choose what is most appropriate for the population you trat.

Psychiatrist and author Irvin Yalom, MD has been a major figure in the field of psychotherapy since he first wrote The Theory and Practice of Group Psychotherapy in 1970 (now in it's 5th edition). Other significant contributions have included Existential Psychotherapy, and NY Times Bestseller Loves Executioner and Other Tales of Psychotherapy. He has written four novels on psychotherapy: When Nietzsche Wept, Lying on the Couch, The Schopenhauer Cure, and The Spinoza Problem.  His works, translated into over 20 languages, have been widely read by therapists and non-therapists alike.
